A lyrical exploration of modernist composer and pianist Artur Schnabel features acclaimed actor Udo Samel, pianist Markus Pawlik, singer Dietrich Henschel, and the Szymanowski Quartet. Filmmaker Matthew Mishory uses unexpected textures (super8, drone footage, back-projection) shot in Italy, Switzerland, Vienna, and Berlin to chart Schnabel's course through the emotional and physical landscapes of the European 20th Century. "Hardly a run-of-the-mill talking heads hagiography... [No Place of Exile] traces Schnabel’s path across countries and continents, with haunting imagery serving as a visual score to Schnabel’s music." - Tablet Magazine
